Through dressing e.g. shall we put on the blue top today, can you get me your pink socks, your t-shirt is yellow like mine, lets match the socks in pairs etc.
Through your every day routine e.g. would you like your drink in the green cup, can you put your toys in the brown box, what’s your favourite colour mines ? etc
Through play e.g. I like that blue car you are playing with, can you build a tower of red bricks, shall we put the gold dress on your Barbie how many yellow ducks in the bath etc
When out e.g. look at that red bus, lets see how many black doors we can see, I love the green leaves can you find one for me, when shopping can you put the oranges in the trolley, we need some green apples and yellow bananas, etc
If your child is stuck on a particular colour perhaps have a day when you only point out that colour .etc
Through play e.g. colour matching / sorting games- smarties are good to sort and eat, threading coloured beads, sorting coloured pencils, make colour snap cards etc.
Play eye spy something the colour of ?
Through books and stories e.g. little red riding hood , point out colours in the book etc
Its important not to keep on asking your child what colours this? what colours tha?, instead name colours to them, ask them to get things of a certain colour and never reprimand your child should they get it wrong but help and encourage them to find the right one and give lots of praise.
If you have any other ideas for helping a child learn their colours please let me know so we can add them to the list thank you.
