Make shape pictures by drawing around objects or using pre-cut shapes.
Go on a shape hunt. For example “How many circles can you find in the house?”
If your child is using toys to build, talk about all the different shapes they can see. How are they the same? How are they different.
Through play e.g. shape sorters, duplo/lego bricks, puzzels etc.
When out e.g. look at that door it’s a big rectangle, lets see how many square windows we can see, look at the wheels on that bike they are the same shape as a circle, when shopping point out different shape boxes and tins etc
If your child is stuck on a particular shape perhaps have a day when you only point out that shape .etc
Through games e.g. shape matching / sorting games threading different shaped beads, make shape matching card game etc.
Play eye spy something the shape of ?
Through books and stories.
Its important not to keep on asking your child what shape is this? what shape is that? instead name shapes to them ask them to get things of a certain shape and never reprimand your child should they get it wrong but help and encourage them to find the right one and give lots of praise. If you have any other ideas for helping a child learn their colours please let me know so we can add them to the list thank you.
